Venus Fly

Venus Fly ft. Janelle Monae is the 12th track from Grimes’ 2015 album, Art Angels. In an interview with Ableton, Grimes talked about some interesting production techniques she used for the track, including a dentists drill… “I had these awesome 808s, that I built using two different 808 sounds. Then I sampled a dentist drill and tuned it to the 808s and layered it very lightly on top so that they sounded a bit more savage but also wide and clean cuz I think I panned the drill hard and the 808s were mono in the centre.” (Ableton.com, 2016) . In the same interview she also talks about how she samples sounds, and then completely changes them through processing so that they’re no longer recognisable as the original sound, for instance, she might sample a percussive instrument with a lot of melodic information, but bring the reverb up really high so that none of the original percussion is there, and it’s all melody. Grimes is no stranger to doing things her way.
